The College receives a number of requests each year to conduct research with students, staff and parents of the College. These applications are evaluated by The Scots College Research Committee to determine their appropriateness. The Committee evaluates applications based on the following criteria:
- Educational validity - Does the research have a clear question and measurable objectives? Is the research drawing on sound methodologies and current literature? Is it connected to a reputable scholarly institution? Does it have publication outcomes?
- Alignment with the mission, values and strategic focus of the College - Does the research demonstrate alignment with the holistic Christian educational philosophy of the College and its stated mission, values and strategic focus? Is the research in any way likely to compromise the reputation and integrity of the College? Does the research inordinately disrupt the regular teaching and learning activities of the College?
- Ethical considerations - Is the research design in alignment with best practice in ethical human research? Is information about the research clearly and transparently accessible to potential participants? How will consent be obtained? What measures are created in the research for grievances and risk management?
- Resourcing - What, if any, costs in terms of money, personnel, facilities and utilities are involved in the research, and how do these effect the operations of the College? Does the research make best use of competitive funding sources?
- Scope and timing - Does the research have a clear start and end date, and clear sample sizes? Does the gathering of data fit with the teaching and learning and co-curricular calendars at Scots? If the research is longitudinal, are measures taken to ensure its sustainability over the course of the project?
