Research Projects

Research at Scots operates at a number of levels:

1. Action Learning Initiatives
Guided by the Deans, the Action Learning Initiatives aim to develop continuous and thoroughgoing action learning at class, teacher, department, and Faculty levels, in order to place the College in a position of being constantly on the cutting edge of educational practice. Some of the projects currently underway include:
  • The Flipped Classroom (Mathematics / Michelle Ferguson);
  • Engagement through inquiry (Year 10 Honours Science / Chris Metcalfe and Eric Gibbings);
  • ALI in the English program (English), and
  • Collaborative Teaching in the Creative Arts (Sarah Zitner)

2. Special Research Projects

A number of projects pertinent to the Strategic Intent of The Scots College are underway, including Dr Caitlin Munday's Master Teacher Mentoring Project, which helps experienced and talented teachers explore and share their philosophy and practice, Mr Tenzing Tsewang's programs in Sports Science, Dr Hugh Chilton and Dr Mark Hutchinson's work on engaging students, parents and alumni in writing for the Scots Dictionary of Biography, and various staff connected to the Glengarry program on Experiential Learning.

3. Masters Research Program:
As part of their coursework, Amanda Lazar and Cameron Atkinson are identifying environmental effects on creative learners; Stuart Pearson is unpacking the reasons why men choose to become teachers; and David Todd and Ben Sawyer are working on student experiences and understanding the key motivators of alumni giving.

4. Staff Research:
A number of staff at the College are engaged in pedagogical and discipline-specific research. Read about their work here.

5. University Partnerships include studies of adolescent behaviour with regard to social media (Dr Spring Cooper Robbins and Associate Professor Rachel Skinner, UNSW), boys and their understanding of the HPV public awareness program (Dr Spring Cooper Robbins, University of Sydney), and ‘Body versus Brain’ Training  (Dr Rhonda Orr, Dr Helen O'Connor, Associate Professor Nicholas O'Dwyer, Joanna Li, and Tenzing Tsewang, University of Sydney)
